Overview The Clinical Informatics Specialist, under the guidance of the Manager, Clinical Informatics, is responsible for the analysis, planning, implementation, and evaluation of clinical information systems that impact the nursing department and users. The Clinical Informatics Specialist is a change agent working with the physicians and other clinical specialties in the design, training and implementation phases of projects, as well as ensuring that appropriate procedures and processes are developed for sustaining the application of new systems and projects. The Clinical Informatics Specialist collaborates with Trinity Hospitals, ITAT committee and the UnityPoint Health System Committees to create and maintain a shared vision and active network of clinical relationships. Responsibilities Essential Functions/Responsibilities: % of Time (annually) Key Accountability Organizational & Regional Collaboration of Electronic Health Record (EHR) related to new systems and enhancements. * Researches, evaluates and makes recommendations on the need for new information systems or system enhancements with nursing department end users, IT, vendors and management by evaluating existing operations and systems including potential cost savings, volumes, data flow, constraints, documents, reports and impacts to nursing end-users. * Requests and reviews information from vendors related to new systems or system enhancements requested by nursing end-users, IT and TRHS Management. Ensures that clinical information systems are in compliance with JCAHO, CMS and/or other regulatory standards. * Provides project management to Trinity IT staff and local staff on all clinical IT projects. Assigns clear authority and accountability, monitors progress against the plan. Identifies/anticipates barriers to collaboration and takes action to remove/minimize barriers. * 25% Key Accountability Education and End User Support for EHR. * Understands and addresses the impact of the clinical applications on nursing and clinical operations. Identifies and articulates the links among the TRHS Strategic Plan, information system projects and initiatives, and customer needs. * Provides information, changes or support as requested by Trinity's IT or TRHS departments. * Serves as a resource to others where knowledge or skills are helpful. Mentors nursing colleagues in specific software applications. Contributes skill and knowledge to maintain and improve areas of responsibility. Recommends strategies for improvement of patient care. * Effectively manages own time and projects. Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing priorities and end-user needs 50% Key Accountability EHR analytic and compliance monitoring * Utilizes research findings, critical thinking, clinical analysis and knowledge of current trends to create and maintain an environment for continuous quality improvement. Engages others in problem solving, improvement plans and decisions. . * Demonstrates creativity and independent thinking in development of alternative designs to achieve new objectives. Recognizes when involvement of others is necessary * Provides support during reviews for accreditations of compliance with JACAHO, CMS and/or other regulatory specialists. 15 % Basic UPH Performance Criteria * Demonstrates the UnityPoint Health Values and Standards of Behaviors as well as adheres to policies and procedures and safety guidelines. * Demonstrates ability to meet business needs of department with regular, reliable attendance. * Employee maintains current licenses and/or certifications required for the position. * Practices and reflects knowledge of HIPAA, TJC, DNV, OSHA and other federal/state regulatory agencies guiding healthcare. * Completes all annual education and competency requirements within the calendar year. * Is knowledgeable of hospital and department compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of hospital administrative staff. Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Requirements Identify items that are minimally required to perform the essential functions of this position. Preferred or Specialized Not required to perform the essential functions of the position. Education: RN Licensure- Iowa and Illinois BSN, preferred Experience: Minimum of 5 years' experience in an acute inpatient facility with clinical expertise License(s)/Certification(s): * Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois and Iowa. * Valid driver's license Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: * Requires a high level of Independent judgment and requires the ability to identify work to be done and the action to accomplish it both independently and through teamwork * Knowledge of adult learning principles, curriculum development. Implement education programs specific for system application and anticipated learner audience for a variety of training modalities and monitors effectiveness through appropriate evaluation techniques. * Experience in managing several projects and instructional tool development with associate deadlines. * Responsible as the direct line of communication for the member organization project status to the UnityPoint Health System project lead managers Other: * Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position. * Work may occasionally require travel to other UPH facilities. May drive a rental or own vehicle.
