Overview
The Automation Engineer creates, tests, implements, and supports robotics process and desktop automations. Facilitates information gathering and validation, evaluates performance, and defines automation. The Automation Engineer collaborates with the business process owners to produce a timeline for implementation of the automation and follows through to ensure the continued function of it.The desired candidate will also use knowledge of supply chain practices and procedures to implement long-term supply chain strategies that support business goals.
Primary Tasks
Responsibilities

  • This position will be responsible for installing, sustaining, and regulating the automation systems to ensure maximum cost efficiency
  • Essential Functions: Develop Control Systems based on coordination with OEM, to automate upstream and downstream processing equipment like packaging lines
  • Perform programming, qualification, and validation of digital process automation systems
  • Provide 24x7 on-call Automation Support, including technical support and troubleshooting functions
  • Create detailed road maps to guide automation projects from conception to final implementation
  • Exploring and implementing new ways to automate systems
  • Properly complete documentation for accurate recordkeeping, according to the Engineering Department's procedures, assist with updating departmental procedures; monitor equipment, and ensure preventative maintenance is being done
  • Review, understanding and interpretation of requirements to ensure all specifications are integrated into the design of automation equipment
  • To maintain automation equipment in excellent condition ensuring consistent quality, output and yield
  • Follow systematic root cause problem solving and troubleshooting to resolve issues
  • Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance, completing all associated paperwork and records
  • Support existing automation technology with component and process upgrades
  • Designing and testing automation equipment and processes
  • Implement Supply Chain process improvements to achieve more efficient operations
  • Implement projects according to Good Automated Manufacturing Practice (GAMP) guide for validation of automated systems
  • Perform hands on field installation, operational start-up, calibration, and commissioning activities
  • Performs design, scripting, testing, implementing, maintaining, and modifying automations of moderate complexity, significance, and risk
  • Creates comprehensive test plans and test cases; defines automation data needs across systems and creates a plan to coordinate this test data
  • Creates and executes performance tests to ensure the expected automation performance levels are achieved
  • Facilitates information gathering and validation and conceptualizes the automation solution
  • Collaborates with business process owners and executives to accelerate rollout, adoption, and realization of value
  • Writes documentation that describes automation capabilities and operating procedures
  • Estimates and defines timetables and project tasks; analyzes and estimates cost and time
  • Creates and may review comprehensive test plans and test cases; defines automation data needs across systems and creates a plan to coordinate this test data
  • Monitors operating reliability and consistency of existing automations; proactively identifies opportunities for improvement and recommends technical solutions
  • To provide technical support to all departments for the safety requirements, installation, operation, training and maintenance of all automation/robotic cells
  • Programming of industrial and collaborative robots
  • Participate in NPI, providing expertise and support for the Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Manufacturing (DFM) processes
  • Participate fully in continuous improvement team activities to ensure CI goals are met
  • Perform labor efficiency analysis and develop ideas and solutions to improve labor efficiency
  • Responsible for design, specification, programming, simulation and testing, installation, start-up assistance, and production support of automated production systems
  • Reviews design drawings, user manual and installation manual
  • Works closely with Project Manager/Engineer to meet project timeline and budget
    Secondary Tasks
    • Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance, completing all associated paperwork and records
    • Partner with Process platforms to analyze the value stream of new products, and designing connection solution to realize optimal value creation through automation and light-out manufacturing while improving quality systems of the future
    • Assist with the commissioning of new equipment / projects
    • Order and maintain appropriate stock of spare parts
    • Supports design of automation equipment in respective areas of expertise, e.g., Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, Software Application
    • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
    • Develops recommendations and proposals that drive improvements and support supply chain and the overall company strategic initiatives
    • Assist as required in writing bid specifications for potential vendors for specific projects and create bid comparison matrices for the purposes of vendor selection.
      Education
      Qualifications
      • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer science engineering or a relevant technical field (5+ years' experience desired)

        • Six Sigma Green Belt

          Skills
          • The candidate should have strong written and verbal communication skills
          • A Strong ability with software testing and validation
          • A Strong understanding of Automation and robotics systems
          • Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and perform complex system tests
          • The candidate must be a self-starter with the capacity/desire to be a team-lead on various projects.
          • The candidate should have strong critical thinking skills to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
          • A strong understanding of measurement, engineering principles, and equipment.
          • A strong understanding of Automation Engineering principles and process knowledge.
          • Strong math skills including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications.
          • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
          • Strong Programming skills in languages like Java, C# and python
          • Efficient at writing work instructions, technical dialog and English as a speaking language in Work Instruction Development
            Experience
            • 5+ years' experience desired
            • Experience with the design and implementation of automated systems, especially as related to manufacturing
            • Demonstrated ability to learn and apply appropriate data analytics toolkits such as SQL, Python etc.
            • Experience with the design and implementation of automated systems, especially as related to manufacturing, logistics or Supply Chain environment
            • Experience with robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and machine learning
            • Proficiency in maintaining automation equipment and troubleshooting
            • Operational knowledge of Human Machine Interface (HMI) and PLC programming
            • Familiarity with field I/O devices and automation GUI Tools
            • Lean manufacturing projects with proven cost reduction and efficiency gains
            • A strong experience in operational improvement roles within supply chain operational is required

              • Process Control Plans, PFMEA, FMEA
              • Management and customer support experience
              • Knowledge of circuit boards, processors, chips, electronic equipment, and computer hardware and software, including applications and programming a plus
              • Experience with Application Programming Interface (API) automation
              • Environmental regulatory and OSHA
